National Senior Citizens Day holds a special place in American history. While some commemorate it on August 14—the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935—its modern observance was established in 1988, when President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed the third Sunday of August as National Senior Citizens Day. The occasion not only honors seniors for their lifelong achievements, but also calls attention to the social, health, and economic issues affecting older Americans.
